The Four Clans

Season
Current Season: Greenleaf
Greenleaf has taken hold of the forest, marking an end to the pleasantly warm days of Newleaf. The temperature is now quite hot, at times unbearably so; most prey tend to take shelter during the hottest time of the day. Dangerous thunderstorms are possible and can happen with little warning. Will the heat of Greenleaf cause tempers to flare when tension is already running high in the Clans?

The apprentice padded forward through the territory, stumbling over tree roots and tripping on stones as he continued onward. He wasn't used to being out in the territory even though he had been an apprentice for a few moons. He tripped over one more tree root, and held back a sigh of frustration. How will I ever become a warrior when I can hardly see where I'm stepping? He squinted, but everything was still one big, mixed up blur. Flamepaw sighed. He lowered his muzzle to the ground to pick up Stormblade's scent and realized that it was quite close. He continued in his mentor's direction, narrowly avoiding crashing into a tree. When his mentor's scent was stronger, he squinted, thinking that he could just make out the blurry shape of his mentor. "Stormblade? I'm here. Sorry I took so long," he said.

Stormblade had been appointed Flamepaws mentor after Magmafeather had gone up and vanished on him. So he'd asked Flamepaw to meet him near the clearing just out of camp that he had trained others to fight and hunt in. Seeing him stumble up he found himself wondering yet again if there was something wrong with the pups mismatched vision. The irish wolf hound presented a wide happy smile and wagged his tail "Hi Flamepaw! I was thinking you might like to learn how to hunt first because its something you don't need vision for" After all he had watched Forsakensoul hunt and bring down all kinds of prey without the use of his eyes, so he had high hopes that he'd be able to teach Flamepaw a thing or two about that. He wasn't sure how he was going to teach the apprentice how to fight but decided they'd focus on what he could teach him

His mentor had stated that they could practice hunting, and Flamepaw gave a hesitant nod. "Sure. That sounds good." Perhaps hunting wouldn't be so hard despite his bad vision. He could use scent to try and pinpoint his prey's location, and maybe he'd be able to listen to the scuffling of prey to help with locating it as well. Some things are easier said—er, thought—than done. The apprentice sat back while he waited for Stormblade to continue, his ears perked to catch his mentor's words.

Stormblade nodded before a thought struck him "Even though things are blurry you can still see colour right? You can use that to help you navigate" when he'd been a house pet one of his two legs had worn glasses because their eyes had been funny. When they hadn't had them on they could still see colours and the general shape of things enough not to bump into things all the time. The wolfhound moved into a simple hunting crouch "This is what they call a hunting crouch, you want to keep yourself balanced and low to the ground, keep an eye out for where you can hide your fur so the prey dosen't spot you" he explained jovially hoping he wasn't going too fast.

Flamepaw gave a hesitant nod. "Yes," he started, "but the colors I can see are a bit blended together." It was rather hard for him to describe his vision; besides the blurriness, his vision was rather clouded as well which made things even harder. When his mentor mentioned the hunting crouch, Flamepaw squinted, trying his best to see what his mentor was doing. He frowned; it was quite hard to see Stormblade's exact posture, but he tried to go off of what he could see and most importantly, what Stormblade had described. The apprentice crouched down, feeling around with a paw for taller grass in which he could hide. He moved forward until the grass felt high enough, then lifted his head towards his mentor. "Is this what you mean?" he called out, hoping that his hunting crouch was okay.

Somewhat concerned about Flamepaws sight the wolfhound made a mental note to talk to Twistedfoot and see if there was anything she could do to help him. Watching his apprentice he came over and gently moved the apprentice down a little "There you go, perfect" he barked letting his pleasure show in his voice since he was fairly sure his apprentice couldn't see the wag of his tail. "See if you can use the colours to differentiate things, I'll lie down and you try and stalk me, if you see a quick motion freeze thats usually the prey checking for folks like you and me" he informed the dual eyed apprentice in his usual friendly way. After that he'd get Flamepaw to try and have a go at hunting things, that'd be simple enough hopefully. The apprentice of his had a pretty good nose and sharp ears, he was confident that the youngling would be able to handle it.

Flamepaw nodded at Stormblade's voice, glad that he'd almost gotten the hunter's crouch right on his first try. His mentor's tone sounded pleased, which made Flamepaw feel a bit better about the situation. Perhaps there's hope for me after all. Stormblade's next instructions brought back his worry, however. "Right... okay." His voice was hesitant, and he padded a few fox-lengths away before dropping into the crouch Stormblade had taught him just before. He squinted, trying to detect the gray form of his mentor. Why does gray have to be so similar to green? Perhaps the colors weren't too similar, but a nice, bright orange would have been much easier to detect. Spotting what appeared to be an area of gray in a sea of green, he perked his ears forward and lifted his muzzle. He could hear faint breathing sounds and Stormblade's scent appeared to be the strongest over there. Slowly, the apprentice padded forward, trying his best to detect any quick movements in case he needed to freeze.

Quite comfortable there he was thinking of how else he could help Flamepaw, doing some work on defensive fighting might be good you never knew when you had to defend yourself against prey or even predators. Perhaps they'd try and work on some large prey, the bigger it was the better he'd be able to see it theoretically, he'd talk to him and see if he'd prefer smaller prey he could listen and smell for or bigger prey that he could see more of. Letting his gaze wander over the clearing he waited before flicking his head around looking to stare at Flamepaw hoping that the apprentice would be able to see the quick movement. It'd be crucial to hunting all kinds of prey, if not then they could go work on scouting for prey and predators and work on things that utilized what senses he did have working for him.

The apprentice continued forward slowly, hesitating when he thought that blurry gray form of his mentor had moved. Or did he? Flamepaw frowned. It had been such a slight change to him that he didn't know if he was overthinking it. But it's better to be safe than sorry, right? He decided to freeze for a few moments, long enough that Stormblade would notice he'd stopped, before he headed forward once again. Was I supposed to wait longer? He was growing more and more doubtful with each pawstep, certain that he must be doing something wrong. When he got close to Stormblade, he stopped once again and crouched lower before springing forward. He landed just besides his mentor, but stumbled and toppled over onto his side. "Did I do okay? What should I do differently?" Flamepaw asked as he got up to his paws. His expression was uncertain and worried, as he was sure Stormblade would tell him that he'd messed up somehow.

After a few seconds he looked away and only looked back once Flamepaw pounced and landed next to him "No you did good Flamepaw, you need to believe in yourself a little, you can do this. You've done some training with your old mentor right? What things have you done with him" he supposed he should have asked the apprentice this first but it was his first time mentoring another and he was a little higgelty pigglety over it. If flamepaw could tell him what he'd already learnt and knew then he could expand on that, he watched the mismatched gaze of the apprentice quietly wishing there was a way he could help the vision of him and knowing he was helpless. However he'd still determinedly do his best to help him out, he could still be a warrior maybe he just needed to start going for bigger prey like a doe or a fawn. Depending on what he said next perhaps he'd suggest that then, quite pleased with that idea he settled himself down to listen to what Flamepaw had to say about his previous mentor Magmafeather

Flamepaw gave a faint smile when Stormblade told him that he'd done okay. His mentor was probably right in that he needed to have more confidence. If he doubted himself all of the time, he'd never improve. "We worked on some fighting, and a little bit of hunting larger prey, too," he said. It had been hard work considering his vision, but hunting larger prey was definitely easier than hunting smaller prey. Even if he could scent and hear the smaller prey, his accuracy wasn't the best as he couldn't always pinpoint its exact location. He sat back down and turned his head in Stormblade's general direction, his ears perked to hear what his mentor would suggest next.
