The Four Clans

Season
Current Season: Greenleaf
Greenleaf has taken hold of the forest, marking an end to the pleasantly warm days of Newleaf. The temperature is now quite hot, at times unbearably so; most prey tend to take shelter during the hottest time of the day. Dangerous thunderstorms are possible and can happen with little warning. Will the heat of Greenleaf cause tempers to flare when tension is already running high in the Clans?

The rusty red apprentice dashed through the forest at top speed skidding to a halt in the arena that had been pointed out as where she and her mentor were going to train. She was so excited she could barely keep still the goodly natured and rather obedient young female flicked her tail from side to side. Not seeing or smelling her mentor she began zipping all over the clearing unable to help the high spirits that had settled over her. Her green eyes were bright and eager to learn and practice what would make her a good warrior, a soft giggle left her as she tripped over a root and was sent tumbling. Landing in a sandy area of the clearing she got back up and vigorously shook the sand out of her pelt. Making herself sit still she listened carefully trying to see if she could pick up on her mentor approaching her.

Weaving around the budding vegetation that filled Thunderclan territory, Dovefrost approached her new apprentice, Maplepaw, who seemed very eager to begin her training. With the pads of her feet imprinting onto the new, sandy terrain as she trotted over to the rusty-colored youngling, Dovefrost greeted her student with a small, but pleasant smile.

"Good morning, Maplepaw. It seems you have slept well." The older she-wolf said with friendly grin, having noticed her apprentice's abundant energy.

Maplepaws forest green eyes lit up seeing her mentor, an excited smile over her cream and rusty muzzle "Hi Dovefrost! Yes I slept really well! What are we going to learn first? I'll do whatever you want me to do, i promise I'll be very good I'll prove to you I can be the best apprentice!" she lifted her head watching her white mentors face. It was painfully clear that she wanted to do her very best and prove that she was a good apprentice. Her creamy coloured paws shifted excitedly she would be better much better than her brother would be she was a good pup and always did as she was told that was for sure.

With a small giggle leaving her mouth, Dovefrost began to list out the skills to be practiced for that day.

"Well I was hoping you were in the mood for some hunting, the clan could really use some fresh kill as of now. Perhaps we'll work on our stalking methods, and then try to catch some small animals to start out. Does that sound alright?"

The senior warrior knew Maplepaw would probably agree to her suggestion, as the youngling was seemingly ready to do anything. And Dovefrost admired that specific trait in her new apprentice, being well aware that it would be something that would help Maplepaw become a great warrior.

She nodded "Sure! Lets learn how to hunt! Show me what to do and i'll do my best!" yes she sure would, she'd do her very best and do her mentor proud. She grinned up at Dovefrost waiting to be shown what to do, she'd never been shown anything to do with hunting and fighting and so she backed up several paw steps enough to nearly trip over her own tail before she settled down again. She then focused quite acutely on her mentor waiting patiently, she would study real hard and out do her brother then he'd have to forgive herfor messing up with lionpaw!

Seeing how Maplepaw was clearly ready to get started, the older warrior began to instruct her young apprentice, wanting her to know the basics before going out and catching an animal.

"Okay Maplepaw, when we're trying to sneak up to our prey the best thing to have is cover, such as a bush or tall grass. That way, your prey will not be able to detect your presence with their vision. But don't think that's all there is stalking. Remember to keep downwind when creeping close to your target. You should always be going the direction of the wind. That way, your prey won't be able to smell your scent." Dovefrost explained to her student. "Now, lets try to find some cover so we can practice our stalking techniques." The pure white she-wolf instructed.

Waiting for Maplepaw to lead the way, Dovefrost rose from her sitting position on the sandy ground, and stood idle.

Her ears perked up when her mentor began speaking, she made sure to pay very close attention. Okay, so I need to keep the wind blowing towards me, and I have to use bushes and plants as cover. Right I can do this! I can totally do this! She nodded when Dovefrost suggested that they find some cover, the rusty red apprentice with her brown legs and creamy paws padded over towards where some bushes were. She sniffed around trying to figure out what direction the slight breeze was coming from, managing to figure it out after several moments of thought the intelligent and ever working Maplepaw looked over at Dovefrost wondering what stalking actually was she'd never been shown how to stalk or hunt animals. Her green eyes revealed the depth of her need to prove that she was indeed good enough.

A small smile, full of pride, erupting on the older she-wolf's muzzle as her young apprentice succesfully found cover. And not to mention stayed downwind the entire time. Maplepaw was seemed to be a quick learner, which was something Dovefrost liked.

"Good job, Maplepaw!" The senior warrior told in a friendly tone. Now, lets get to stalking techniques." Dovefrost explained before beginning to demonstrate proper stalking methods to her young student.

"When sneaking up on prey, we want to remain as quiet and still as possible. Of course, not completely still, as you need to move forward in order to continue the hunt. But when creeping closer to your target, advance slowly. Also, it's better to keep lower to the ground, as you can get the maxium amount of cover that way." The pure white fae informed, while she demonstrated she to the youngling.

Her green eyes lit up with excitement and happiness, she had done a good job! She watched how Dovefrost moved, focusing sharply on how the older wolf moved. Okay so i need to stay sneaky quiet, keep very close to the ground and to keep slowly moving. Righty I can do that! she crouched down copying how dovefrost had shown her how to properly stalk prey. She got herself down onto the ground and began slipping through the underbrush, she stayed as silent as she could, her rusty fur not blending in as well as she hoped but she still tried. She moved around some more, heading off and vanishing for a moment before she reappeared and bounced forward pouncing for dovefrosts tail, pinning it underneath her creamy paws she giggled a little unable to help herself.

Proud on how quickly Maplepaw was learning, the senior warrior admired the rusty-colored youngling as she practiced her hunting skills. Noticing how her apprentice seemingly disappeared for a moment, caused Dovefrost frantically look around. "Maplepaw?!"

When the older female jumped in surprise as her student revealed her hiding spot, and pounced on her fluffy tail, she let out a cordial chuckle.

"You're quite the fast learner, Maplepaw." Dovefrost commented.

The young wolf paused in her puppish lightly chewing of the fluffy white tail she had caught in her paws. Relinquishing her grasp on the item she got back up looking a little sheepish and shy at the same time. however her mentors word of praise had her dipping her head in gratitude, she wasn't sure if she was ready to hunt an actual animal yet perhaps they should practice some more. She didn't want to try it too early and make a mistake, she'd look so foolish, the rusted hued apprentice sat down wagging her tail slightly waiting for Dovefrosts next orders.

Noticing how her young apprentice was waiting eagerly for more of the lesson, Dovefrost began to speak again.

"Okay so before we try hunting some small animals, why don't you try and stalk me instead?" The senior warrior suggested.

She knew it would be a good practice drill to try, as Maplepaw seemed like the kind of apprentice that liked to do things correctly. Oh how the rusty-colored youngling reminded Dovefrost of Cherrypaw. Even down to the color of their pelts. Momentarily lost in thought of her deceased student, one who had felt like a younger sister to her, Dovefrost quickly regained her composure, knowing she shouldn't reflect on sad thoughts in front of Maplepaw.

Her green eyes blinked as Dovefrost almost read her mind, admiration for the older wolf shone through her features as she hung onto every word that her mentor said. A swift nod showing she comprehended what Dovefrost had decided that they would do next, she appeared a little concerned when the white wolf infront of her appeared to drift off into memory. The older female looked sad as well as nostalgic, Maples natural urge of wanting to help out surged forward, she reached out and lightly touched one of her creamy front paws to one of Dovefrosts bigger ones. Once her mentor had regained her composure she withdew her paw and got up onto her paws "okay I'll go hide and stalk you then!" she didn't bring up the quiet moment that they'd both shared, instead she turned and picked a spot to head into the thick brush trying to find cover that would suit her pelt better.

Registering the small moment of comfort her new apprentice gave her, Dovefrost gave Maplepaw a warm smile of appreciation after she composed herself. After the senior warrior felt slightly ashamed for letting her student see her moment of sadness, she quickly let it go, as the two had more important things to do.

Getting into position, Dovefrost lowered her body to the ground, and surveyed her surroundings. Not being able to detect Maplepaw with her golden eyes, the pure white female let a slight grin, full of pride, erupt on her maw. Her apprentice was truly exceling in her training.

Awaiting for Maplepaw's imminent attack, Dovefrost sniffed the fresh air, hoping not to catch her student's scent.

She'd managed to find some reddish coloured clay and had decided to hide herself against that, her green eyes peered at her white mentor silently glad that it wasn't leaf bare anymore. With no snow to hide her, her mentor was easy to pick out, she slipped down through the undergrowth making a couple of mistakes and rustling a few old dried leaves. She winced every time she screwed up silently chiding herself for it, she retreated whenever she made a mistake and after several tries was able to figure out the best way to get around with making much noise. She tip toed forward on her creamy paws and readied herself before pouncing forward, aiming to land on the white wolfs back.

Not being able to see Maplepaw with her golden eyes, Dovefrost let a small smile of pride form on her maw. But the snow-colored female definitely picked up on a few mistakes with her pure white ears. Dovefrost made note to correct her student, and help her fix her errors after she revealed herself. Once Maplepaw sprung from her cover, and onto Dovefrost's back, the senior warrior gently shook her apprentice off back, and onto the sandy ground.

"Your usage of cover was excellent Maplepaw, but I did detect a few errors in your stalk. Remember to keep vigilant for noise makers such as small branches or dried leaves. If you do happen to make a noise, and you're close enough to your target, begin the hunt right away, as you don't want to give your prey to get a head start." Dovefrost explained to her student.

She let go of her mentors back when the snowy wolf shook herself, landing on her paws she panted and shook the sand out of her distinctive red fur. She listened as Dovefrost spoke pointing out what she'd done wrong and a couple of ways to avoid making that mistake in the future. As well as some advice on what to do if she did, she nodded eager now to try and find prey and hunt it. Her forest green eyes were alight with eagerness to learn new things and discover how to best serve her clan. The obedient apprentice stayed quiet waiting for Dovefrost to tell her what they would be doing next.

Noticing Maplepaw was quietly waiting for her to resume their training session, the senior warrior began to speak yet again.

"Okay Maplepaw, now that we seem to have the basics down, why don't we go and try to find some small game?" Dovefrost suggested. "I'm sure there is plenty of little critters hiding around here." The snow-colored female added in a cordial tone.

Awaiting for her apprentice's response, Dovefrost lowered her haunches onto the sandy ground, inhaling the cool, fresh air of New leaf.

Maple eagerly listened to her mentor, already wanting to be hunting and to catch more than her brother, bigger prey than her brother. There was a determined yet eager gleam in her green eyes as she thought of this, when she was given the go ahead she lifted her pinky nose to the air and took a deep whiff. Her mind was instantly bombarded with various scents of the forest, it took her a little while to sort through everything she could smell pushing away the scents of earth and trees managing to focus on the warm scents of prey. Okay... so that one is a squirrel, thats not worth hunting that wouldn't make a mouthful, umm ooh thats a... doe and a new born baby! Deer tastes so scrummy! Focus Maple Focus. She looked up at her mentor and spoke "I can smell some deer and some birds, oh and a wild pig!" she'd only ever smelt that once before when father had brought her mother some when they'd been little. She watched Dovefrosts face eagerly hoping that she'd gotten everything correct.

Listening to her apprentice's list of various prey items she caught the scent of, Dovefrost quickly responded.

"I think either a bird or a wild pig would be the best choices for now. We can try to catch a deer another day."

The senior warrior did not wish to overwhelm Maplepaw with big game, so, she suggested something easier to try first.

(Sorry for the late response!)

Wild boar could be dangerous prey, their sharp tusks and strong compact bodies making them a challenge and were almost a different creature entirely to their domestic cousins. Maple remembering her fathers wound to his side after being caught on the tusks of the boar he'd hunted decided that she'd go for a bird. She sniffed around paying more attention to the feathery avian scent, slipping off into the brush she crouched down her attention focused on a bush-turkey. She'd tasted them before on the freshkill pile back in camp, her stomach rumbled quietly at the thought, continuing on after the bird she waited and leapt forward. Smacking into it she stunned herself and the bird, managing to shake herself out of it her teeth clamped around its neck. Shaking her head from side to side she soon heard the creatures neck snap, half dragging half carrying the creature she headed back to dovefrost for praise.
