The Four Clans

Season
Current Season: Greenleaf
Greenleaf has taken hold of the forest, marking an end to the pleasantly warm days of Newleaf. The temperature is now quite hot, at times unbearably so; most prey tend to take shelter during the hottest time of the day. Dangerous thunderstorms are possible and can happen with little warning. Will the heat of Greenleaf cause tempers to flare when tension is already running high in the Clans?

Welcome Heavypaw, to your training! Here you'll learn how to hunt, fight, and defend for the clan. Windclan wolves pride themselves on their self-reliance and speed, so you will need much of that in your training. Larkstar is usually patient and kind, but can occasionally be a bit short tempered.
In order to graduate you need at least 30 points in 2 skills, and 60 points in one skill. The choice of what skills you want to pursue are up to you.

Larkstar padded into the clearing, her brown fur clean and fluffed out. She was excited to be Heavypaw's mentor, though she visibly kept herself more calm. Sniffing the air for her new apprentice, she sat down, curling her tail around her paws. "What will we go over first?" She wondered, her gaze thoughtful. "Maybe I'll let him decide. That's how my mentor did things." She briefly recalled her old mentor Fawnfleck, who had passed away a good while ago. But she pushed the memory out of her mind, knowing that dwelling on that would only dampen her mood.

(OOC: I want to focus on maxing out Finding Prey and Offensive/Defensive fighting before I want Heavypaw to become a warrior. His prey hunting skills will increase as I raise his finding prey, since obviously he'd be hunting afterwards right XD)

Heavypaw eagerly clawed at the ground, excited to begin his first training session. He'd been dreaming of this moment since he was a small pup. It was a tough decision to make, deciding what to work on first. It seemed by Larkstar's posture that she would be letting him choose. I like her already. "How about we start with tracking prey? That's one of the most important duties, right?"

(OOC: Sounds good! And yes we'll do hunting after we find the prey Smile)

The she-wolf listened to her apprentice's reply and nodded her head. "Being able to track prey is very important. You can't get too far hunting-wise if you don't know how to find what your after." She said almost cheekily. It was a bit humorous to say, but it was very true. "We'll start with smaller prey first. Most of the moorland is home to rabbits and hares," she began, turning her gaze towards the moors that surrounded them. "Rabbits make very little noise, so you're going to have to use your nose to find them. One way to find them is too scent out their droppings, as usually the rabbit wouldn't be faraway." She instructed her apprentice, turning back towards him and meeting his gaze. "Can you smell any rabbits or their droppings around here?" She asked, blinking at Heavypaw.

Heavypaw nodded and stuck his nose into the air, inhaling as deeply as he could. Sure enough, he caught a good whiff of a pungent dung scent. It wasn't like the droppings he'd smell from his clanmates, that's for sure. But either way it was equally disgusting. Heavypaw wrinkled his nose and glanced up at his mentor. "I... I think I smell it! It's coming from upwind, right?"

Larkstar nodded at Heavypaw's find. There definitely were rabbits in the area, and they would make excellent practice for the young male. "Well done. Now that you have the general area that the rabbit's in, you make your way over slowly, careful not to make a sound." With that Lark crouched down setting her paws lightly over the moor grass. Her tail was tucked so as to not make noise and she padded forward. "On the moor, the wind can change very easily, so it's important not to take too much time when you're stalking your prey." She then stood up straight again and looked back at Heavypaw. "Then when you're able to see the prey, that's when you attack. Rabbits are fast, but Windclan wolves are faster, so we use our speed to our advantage." She continued, eyeing the young male to make sure he was paying attention. "Focus on your hunting stance first, and then we'll go after the real prey once you have that down."

Heavypaw listened intently as his mentor explained everything. Then she told him to practice his crouch before actually hunting. He frowned in disappointment, but didn't argue. The dark wolf lowered his whole body, flattening himself against the earth as low as he could get. Anxiety was getting the better of him, he'd only ever dreamed of being mentored by the great Clan leader herself, so now he wanted to work extra hard to make her choice worth it. Because of how nervous he was, he didn't noticed his tail twitching in anticipation as he bunched his muscles together, summoning all his strength into his hindquarters so he'd be able to burst for the pretend prey. "Like this?"

Lark observed the male's posture, noticing his tail that was not tucked properly. "Your paws look good, but you need to tuck in your tail so that it doesn't brush against anything." She replied, padding a couple steps around Heavypaw as he practiced. The wind sighed against the nearby heather, and the she-wolf pricked her ears to the sound. It was such a relaxing noise, one that Larkstar had grown up with. Even though it could sometimes be hard to hear prey through the breeze, it made scenting them much easier. Once the male had fixed his posture, Lark nodded her approval, turning her head towards the wind to sniff the breeze. "Now, try that hunting technique on the rabbit you scented." She told him, waiting to hear his reply and watch him start to hunt.

Heavypaw's ears and paws tingled with anxiety as Larkstar encouraged him to try it out. Quietly, he nodded at her instructions and slid off in the direction of the rabbit, keeping his spine flat. The white pelt and bushy tail soon became visible, and he bunched his muscles together in excitement as he watched it move unknowingly closer... closer... Now! He launched himself across the clearing but landed two paces in front of the rabbit. Stunned, the prey gave him a look of curiosity before hopping over to him, jumping on his head, and proceeded to launch a rapid fire of droppings on him. Embarrassed, the apprentice hauled himself onto his feet and watched the cheeky rabbit take off before slinking in defeat over to his mentor, too embarrassed to speak.

(OOC: I rolled a random number from 0-10 to see if he'd catch it. Because rabbits are harder to catch, it would normally be an 8 or higher to get it, but since he's windclan, he needed a 6 or higher. He got 1 XDD, so I thoroughly punished him mwahaha!)

(Lol, poor Heavypaw xD)
Watching her apprentice begin the hunt, she observed his careful stance, impressed at his quick ability to learn. "Looks right so far...as long as he continues the way he's going-" The male then leaped forward, his powerful back legs launching him over his target. The rabbit peered at him, before leaping over his head and scurrying away, leaving a trail of brown droppings in its wake.
Larkstar snorted, trying to suppress a grin. "That was one of the best hunts I've seen in a long while!" She thought, trying her best to compose herself as Heavypaw returned to her, a defeated look on his face. She knew that his miss would definitely not be as comical to him as it was to the older she-wolf. "Well, you have the stalking technique down right," she said, trying her best to be encouraging. "You just overdid that jump a bit. Maybe.." Larkstar turned her head, scanning the training hollow that they were situated in. Spotting a smooth stone, the she-wolf padded over and picked it up in her jaws, carrying it over to the male before letting it thud on the ground. "Try timing your jumps by practicing with this rock. It might help you get better at judging your distance before you leap."

"Okay Larkstar," Heavypaw smiled, relieved that she didn't ridicule him more than he already felt. Although, in due time, he might find his first hunt to be quite the show. He watched as his mentor placed a smallish rock in front of him and instructed him to try again. This time he knew the target wouldn't move. It also didn't have bowels either. That's a plus.

Heavypaw stepped back a few wolf-lengths before dropping into his crouch yet again. He narrowed his eyes and focused on his pretend prey. Now, just because it couldn't move, doesn't mean he can't miss it. His pine green optics flashed in exhileration as he estimated how far a rabbit would go once they saw him mid leap, then started storing the energy he would need to get there. Flicking his ears back, the dark apprentice pulled back and then rocketed off his haunches, successfully landing just a whisker-length in front of the rock.

Triumphant, he glanced back over to his mentor, tongue hanging out of his maw in a gleaming smile.

(Used RNG again, 0-5 this time. Anything below 3 was a miss. Here's what he got <3)

Larkstar watched the male, quite pleased when he was able to land a catch on the stone she had propped for him. "Well done," she woofed, nodding her head. "Now, do you suppose that you could try for a rabbit again?" she asked, cocking her head towards the apprentice. "There might be more around here if you use your nose." There were indeed more prey to be found here, it was green-leaf after all. The she-wolf was happy to be training her apprentice in the most active season for prey, once Leaf-fall or Leaf-bare came the hunting would be more difficult.

(you can also up Heavypaw's chance of catching now that he's trained some more, up to you Smile)

(Yeah, I'll up it to where he needs a 7 since he didnt get a lot of points anyways rofl)

Heavypaw nodded, wagging his tail. This was the perfect season to be practicing hunting in. That way when leaf-fall and leaf-bare came, he'd be ready to support his Clan instead of being another mouth to feed. He cocked his head back and breathed in the warm scents of summer. He could scent rabbit again- but this time it was stronger! Almost as if there were a whole pack of rabbits!

He looked back up towards his mentor questioningly. "I don't understand, why do I smell so many? Aren't rabbits solitary?"

The she-wolf viewed Heavypaw as he sniffed the air, no doubt taking in the scent of the many rabbits in the area. "Rabbits live together in warrens- or groups," she replied cocking her head. "Where there's one rabbit there's usually more, even if you can't see them." They were especially abundant here because it was morning. Once the sun rose higher the creatures would begin to disappear, only leaving behind a few stragglers who were either too ignorant or too focused on filling their bellies. Larkstar waited to see what the young male would do, hoping that he would be able to land a good catch.

I didn't know that, Heavypaw thought, taking a moment to note it into his brain. Hesitantly he stepped out and started following the trails, nervously glancing back at his leader and mentor. Her eyes were bright and full of encouragement. She believed in him, so he must be able to do this. The brown wolf stalked off and kept his ears and nose peeled for any movement.

He heard some scuttling in the bushes, and instantly dropped down into the crouching formation he was taught. He drew in a deep breath, channeling every ounce of concentration and strength he could as he stared down his prey. Only this time he had one obstacle that was new- a big old heather bush in his way. Heavy couldn't see the rabbit through it but he knew it was there. I can do this, he thought to himself as his eyes strained to see any movement. He couldn't wait too much longer now.

Just wait... wait for your chance... now! Heavypaw thrusted himself forwards, tucking his head into his chest instinctively and squeezed his eyes shut as he burst through the heather. On the other side was an unsuspecting rodent who was paralyzed in fear, moving only a second two late. The apprentice's strong paws held it down and with a snarl he lunged forwards to snap its spine in his jaws.

When the white fluffball stopped twitching, he brought it back to his mentor, placing it at her paws. "I might have scared some off," he admitted.

Little tingles of pain erruppted in his head, and he swiped a paw over it to see what it was. Turns out, he'd gotten of few sticklers in it after charging through the heather in reckless abandon.

Larkstar nodded at Heavypaw's catch, pleased that he had improved his skill over last time. "Good job," she woofed, nodding her head in approval. "And you didn't even need to see the rabbit to know it was there," she remarked, giving him a grin. At the male's comment the she-wolf flicked her ears, quite aware that any nearby rabbits may have been startled by the noise. "That's alright for now, there will be more later," she replied, glancing down at the catch he made. "Do you want to keep hunting or would you rather focus on fighting next? We could also go after some larger prey if you think you're ready?" She offered, willing to let the male make the choice.

(Is Heavypaw a large wolf, average, or smaller sized? Just wondering for training :3)

Lark listened to Heavypaw's request, nodding her head in response. "Alright then, we'll do some offensive fighting first and then we'll do the defensive after," she replied, shaking her fur and stretching her paws. "What move to try first? Perhaps a basic one to start off." Deciding on what to teach, the she-wolf then began. "The first move we're going to go over is called the Front Paw Blow. When you approach an enemy, raise your paw and slice downward over their face. It can leave them stunned and block their vision for a few moments." As Larkstar explained, she raised her right paw up and immediately slashed it downward.

(His size right now is a bit bigger than an apprentice his age ((11 moons/1 year)) but by the time he's grown fully he'll be a large sized wolf)

Heavypaw watched in amazement as Larkstar demonstrated this basic, but effective move. He eyed his blunt claws and wiggle his toes, glancing back up towards his mentor. "But our claws aren't pointed, they're rounded. How would that help us?" he asked matter-of-factly. He was curious behind Larkstar's logic to this, but didn't want to seem like he was questioning her knowledge. Oh StarClan, I hope she doesn't think that!

Larkstar gazed at Heavypaw as he asked her a question. "This attack isn't meant to really injure your opponent, it's only meant to stun them." She explained, tilting her head. "Quite a curious one isn't he?" She thought, briefly wondering if she should have gotten Wrenclaw to mentor him. Her brother was usually better at explaining things, his more logical answers would probably please the apprentice more. She continued. "When you're a smaller wolf facing a larger opponent, striking your enemy's eyes will stun them long enough for you to get a good attack in." Lark then darted forward, using her front paw to swipe softly in front of Heavypaw's face, only a whisker above his muzzle. She then launched herself over him, landing steadily on her paws and spinning around. "If I would have hit your eyes, you would have been momentarily blinded. Then when I leaped over you I could have then landed whatever attacks on you and you could do little about it." She explained, stepping back and swiping her tongue over her muzzle. When it came to clarifying matters, the she-wolf was more interested in showing rather then telling.
